The Child Safety Handbook

The Child Safety Handbook has been produced by NSW Police Legacy, together with its partners, for over 5 years. It aims to raise awareness about risks to children and steps that can be taken to protect and keep them safe. It is hoped that all primary school students in NSW aged 5 to 7 years old will have access to a free digital copy of the Handbook.

The Handbook is a comprehensive resource to assist parents, carers as well as teachers on a range of topics essential to child safety. The handbook has been updated to include key messages about bush fire safety given the unprecedented fires we experienced recently.

Stage 3 News

It has been lovely seeing everyone back at school, some certainly a little taller. The Stage 3 team is Mrs Kable (Magenta), Mr Branigan (Gold), Mr Mackay (Lime), Miss Hoddinott (Pink) and Mrs Gordine (Coral).

There is a lot happening this term. The swimming carnival is week 4. Year 6 student wishing to be a house captain will present their speeches to students tomorrow. Successful students will be presented with their badges on Friday. Students wishing to be a techno will receive information next Wednesday.

Year 6 received a green note about polo shirts. All money is due by Friday, 21^st February. Stage 3 will be going to Canberra in week 1, Term 3. A note will be sent home soon. It is great to see so many students with book packs. These can still be purchased at the office.

Stage 3 students are the role models of the school. The little guys really look up to them. Please have a conversation with your child about appropriate language and behaviours they should display at school. It would be great to set up for a great year from the start.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

Stage 2 Camp!

Stage 2 Camp!

On Monday 25^th of November, Stage 2 travelled to Point Wolstoncroft for a three day, two night camp experience.

The students participated in a range of activities including archery, orienteering, rock climbing, pool games plus many more. At each meal a group of students would assist with meal delivery and clean up. It was fantastic to see all of our students take responsibility and enjoy helping out!

The teachers would like to thank all of the students for their incredible behaviour!

Stage 3 News

Term 4 is always a busy term. Students have been busy completing STEM challenges, attending Surf Fun days and running stalls at Tiger Day. Year 5 attended the Rites of Passage at Berkeley Vale campus while Year 6 students are attending orientation days this term at their nominated high schools. All stage 3 students have been invited to attend the Year 6 Farewell on Wednesday, 11^th December. It will be a wonderful way for Year 6 to celebrate their years at Killarney Vale.

Surf Fun Day Experience

Surf fun day was heaps of fun. We got to learn about lifesaving basically. We did 3 activities. Most of them were about life saving. I knew when we first got there that I would have fun with the activities especially to do it with my friends. The activities we did were a good experience but they also turned it into a game which made it fun. They did the activities in alphabetical order. There were three teams, the yellow team, the red team and the green team. I was on the red team and the first activity we did was the rescue tubes. We had to learn how to use them then pair up. One side was the people that needed help to put their hand up and the other side was the people with the rescue tubes. The people with the rescue tubes had to go and save people. We went in the water and we stayed on land too.

The next activity we did was beach activities. We did an obstacle course on the sand and we had to be split into two groups to verse to see who was the fastest. We played touch football which was really fun. We also used the body boards which means that we went into the water and used the surfed. I had heaps of fun and it was a great experience. Bailey D

TUSC Orientation 2019

On the 20th of November, students who will be attending Tumbi Umbi Campus went over to the school for an orientation. And it was great!

At Tumbi we all got organised into groups and we were sent off to many enjoyable activities. My group- group 1,went out to sport and woodwork where we met the staff. It was great fun and we all met new children and the staff. The school was clean and all the staff were really nice and enjoyed helping out in any way possible. I’m excited to attend Tumbi in 2020. RITES OF PASSAGE DAY

Rites of Passage day was really fun. All of Year 5 was able to attend. The day consisted of games, a gender specific theory session and a point based competition with delicious prizes at the end. At the start of the day the girls were sent to the library and the boys were the first to do the games.

At the library, the students were split into roughly 10 groups of 10 and the teachers tried to mix the amount of different schools in each group evenly so they could get to know a bit about the other schools.

The games were mainly team and trust building activities each with a different goal and success criteria. Again the students were in the same groups from the library and got to work with their team in these activities.

Overall the day was very enjoyable and we had lots of fun being able to get to know about the different students and play games and learn about the changes that we had already or may not have known about our body. Leila F

Library Bookworm - Term 4

Wow, what a sensational 2019 our Library has had!

There are many achievements and proud moments that I have witnessed. Once again, I’m incredibly proud of the number of texts borrowed so far this year. A massive 3,294 items have been loaned out! We have lots of passionate readers at KVPS!!

Our annual Scholastic Book Fair and Book Character Parade was again hugely successful! The success of these events couldn't be achieved without the help of our families and the broader community. The profits from Book Week have been allocated to yearly subscriptions. One subscription called Australian Standing Orders – Picture Book collection introduces picture texts to our Library. The other subscription entitled Scholastic’s New Release Collection adds 50 books each term. This subscription package focusses on older readers.

Planning for our 2020 Book Week display is already underway. I wonder what the theme will be.

Library Refurbishment and Air-con

Throughout 2019, our Library has undergone a significant transformation and completed its refurbishment! I am so incredibly proud of the final result, and a huge thank you to Mrs Dillion, who assisted me in completing this project. Our students absolutely love the space and the teaching and learning environment is dynamic, engaging and future focussed.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Support Unit Swimming Scheme

The students from Ruby and Emerald finished Term 2 with a splash. They participated in the School Swimming and Water Safety Program where students developed their swimming skills in a fun environment. The students looked forward to their lessons and were proud of their individual achievements over the two weeks.

Kindergarten have had an extremely successful first year of schooling!

Throughout the year Kindergarten have learnt so many things and made so much great progress this year. We have shared many wonderful memories and have also had fun learning!

Reptile Park –

Last term we hopped on a bus and travelled to the Reptile Park. All of Kindergarten were extremely excited to go on their first excursion. A fantastic day was had by all and Kindergarten can’t wait for their next excursion.

Concert -

Last term we saw K Blue on stage dancing about the Olympics, K Green were seen dancing to Ghostbusters and K/1 Yellow were seen dancing to the Wiggles at their very first school concert. They shone on stage and we are so incredibly proud of them.

SAVE THE DATE - PARENT WORKSHOP

Whilst the students are having an amazing time at the school disco on Tuesday 5th November (5:30pm) we would love all of our parents to come along to a Zones of Regulation workshop with the amazing Mrs Pam Quinn. Mrs Quinn is an expert in this field. Each fortnight the students participate in lessons and activities that help them to recognise and respond when they are experiencing different emotions. Our lessons also aim to teach students how to self regulate their behaviour and recognise when they need support. Our staff team will also be at the workshop to answer any questions. We are looking forward to a very informative evening.

Intention to apply for Year 7 entry to a selective high school in 2021

Selective high schools cater for academically high potential and gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. Selective schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and materials.

Selective high schools are unzoned so parents can apply regardless of where they live. Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 12 March 2020.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2021, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available at:

The application website opens at that link on 8 October 2019 and closes at 10pm on 11 November 2019. You must apply before the closing date.

K-2 Reptile Park Excursion Thursday, 5th September 2019

Last term the students from K-2 went to the Australian Reptile Park. All of the students were extremely excited as we travelled by bus to the park. When we arrived we enjoyed the morning exploring the park and learning about some of our native animals and wildlife at the reptile show. We were then treated to a conservation show where we learnt more about the Tasmanian Devil!

During our time at the park we spent time cuddling the beautiful Kangaroos in the park whilst we ate our lunch, we enjoyed a play in the awesome playground. Students walked around the park and visited the spider and snake enclosures where they were able to learn more about the spiders and snakes found in Australia.

Students all visited Eric the Crocodile and some even thought he wasn’t real as he remained as still as a statue for most of the day!!

We had a fantastic day at the Australian Reptile Park on Thursday. I would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers for their supervision and support during our excursion. Without you, our day would not have run as smoothly as it did. A big thank you also to the K-2 teachers for their amazing efforts throughout the day too!

And finally, a huge thank you and congratulations to our students for their impeccable behaviour and representing our school with great respect and responsibility. Our students shone light bright stars all day!!

Stage 3 Camp 2019

Stage 3 went to Great Aussie Bush Camp at Kincumber on 29^th – 31^st July. We encountered all 4 seasons and broke the drought but had an absolute ball. Every student overcame fears and stepped out of their comfort zones, attempting rock climbing, abseiling, giant swing and many more. The food was yummy, staff were treated like royalty, exhausting days meant restful nights, students of Killarney Vale were amazing and life memories were formed. All photos from camp can be accessed through collaboration at school. Students are most welcome to bring a USB and download.

Horse-Riding

Ruby has enjoyed many Mondays at Riding for the Disabled in Kariong. It has been Jack B’s first time on a horse, where he and Eddy the Shetland pony have a great time. Deakin rides Duke a very fine ex race horse and Mikayla rides Larry who used to be a trotter. Mia rides Buster who she can tell you is a very frustrating horse as he can sometimes be very stubborn. It has been a great term as the students have gotten to know their horses and how to turn, trot and go on beautiful long trail rides.

What’s Been Happening in Stage 1?

1 JADE

This term in 1 Jade students have been continuing to enjoy their daily Targeting Early Numeracy (TEN) Lessons. The students are so enthusiastic about their maths and love challenging each other in circle champion each day. Each morning, we have circle time where each group is taught their activity for the day, students then work in groups to complete their activity on whiteboards. At the end of the lesson, students return to circle time to discuss and reflect on their learning and the strategies used. We repeat the same lesson each day over 4 consecutive days.

Each of our groups are named after animals, in 1 Jade we have some Enthusiastic Emu’s, Proud Platypi, Fantastic Frogs and some Crazy Cockatoo’s. Each of the students is working towards developing their addition and subtraction skills to progress through to the next group. The students know what each group can do and are working hard to challenge themselves each day.

1 RED

Red are a happy, excitable and oh so enthusiastic group of group of six and seven year olds. Of course it is the year when teeth start to fall out and birthday parties reign supreme.

We are totally absorbed in our Targeting Early Numeracy (TEN) program and cannot wait to get into our groups and get started each morning. 1Red continue to be excited by our literacy based English programme and are currently learning about adjectives and their importance in making a sentence come alive. Most of us are completing our reading at home and it certainly helps and shows in the classroom when we read with our teachers. In geography we continue to learn about our place in the world. The planetarium science incursion was an excellent event and we completed some beautiful artwork afterwards. Can’t believe it is halfway through the term already!

1/2 TEAL

Teal have been working hard in mathematics this semester, and we have had many students progress through levels in our Targeting Early Numeracy (TEN) program: Emus, Platypuses, Frogs, Cockatoos, Crocodiles and Flying Foxes. We have been developing our understanding of place value using hundred charts, number lines, base 10 blocks and an abacus to represent numbers from zero to 1000. We have learnt some new games to help us consolidate our knowledge including “The Price is Right” and “Celebrity Heads. We enjoyed our trip to the Planetarium incursion.

2 PURPLE

Purple have been busy this term with a variety of activities. We learnt about space stations and different constellations in our night sky at our Planetarium incursion and enjoyed writing about our experiences back in the classroom. Purple have been working hard in their TEN math lessons and all students are becoming quicker with their math calculations. Purple are excited for their science lesson with Miss Turton each week as they thoroughly enjoy the hands-on activities and experiments she completes with them.

2/3 ORANGE

Orange’s learning has been in full swing this term. We have been doing lots of investigations during our science lessons, learning about different forces and the effect they have on different objects. We would love you to ask us about momentum or friction so we can share our learning. In writing we are trying to use a variety of sentence starters to make our writing more interesting and form paragraphs to organise our writing. Earlier in the term we read the book Esio Trot by Roald Dahl which we thoroughly enjoyed. We then researched tortoises and wrote an information report using all the interesting facts we learnt. Of course, it wouldn’t be 2/3 Orange is there wasn’t a lot of incredible art hanging on the wall. Drop in to see our tortoises, winter craft, ice-creams and all the other amazing things we have been up to.

Kindergarten has had an extremely busy semester and they have loved every moment of it!

Already, Kindergarten has been involved in some exciting learning experiences such as; Super STAR days, School Discos, Easter egg hunt, Easter hat parade, Planetarium incursion, Beach safety talks, STEM Challenge, Buddies and loads of fun classroom learning.

In Literacy, students are continuing to develop their reading, writing and communication skills. In Mathematics, we have been enjoying hands-on activities to explore mathematical problems. In Geography, students are investigating the places they live in and belong to, and they understand that places vary and people have different views about the use of places.

One of Kindergarten’s favourite time of the week is when their Year 6 Buddies come down and spend some quality time together. Kindergarten has thoroughly enjoyed this semester!

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

Term 2 - Stage 2 News

What's new in Stage 2?

Each Stage 2 class has a new guided reading table and 6 stools. The students love working at these tables with their teachers. Check out some of the great work that has been happening. One of our amazing parents has also worked at the Bronze table.

The Stage 2 Homework task is due in Week 8. Some students have completed a diorama and we are super impressed with their efforts. Check out the following snapshot of the dioramas handed in so far.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

Louise Lambeth – Author Visit

Last term Killarney Vale Public School welcomed Louise Lambeth, a very talented local author from the Peninsula to discuss her newly published title, Annie and the Waves. Our author presentation was held in the school’s Library.

Throughout Louise’s presentation she spoke to the students about the value of reading, the editing and publication process, and the important role picture books play in the development of reading. Louise also spoke to our students about the importance of staying safe at the beach. She also brought along many educational resources such as, flags, surf life-saving dress up items and Bruce the Shark, who educated students on the appropriate times to go swimming!

It was a wonderful experience for all our students! All students across the Stage were thoroughly engaged and asked Louise some very interesting questions about her text and her Surf Life Saving career. Louise sent me an email later that evening and mentioned what a wonderful time she had at KVPS! She also commended the students on their beautiful behaviour throughout the day.

Well done KV, always making me proud!

My sincere thanks to our families who brought in their $2 donations. All the money raised to see Louise has been used to purchase quality literature from the author.

Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC)

The 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) has commenced. It has been wonderful to see students across the Stages participate in this fantastic reading initiative. Students from K-2 are completing the PRC with me in Library sessions and absolutely loved this week’s chosen text, The Terrible Plop by Ursula Dubosarsky. A definite must read for anyone who loves a good twist!

The PRC will close Friday, 30^th August 2019 for students.

Term 3 – Book Week Celebrations

Our 2019 Book Week Celebrations are quickly approaching and our students are becoming extremely excited about KV’s decoration theme!

PINK News

We are a cross stage consisting of 14 Year 4 students and 14 Year 5 students. Our classroom is an encouraging and supportive classroom where learning and working as a team is our main goal. In Literacy, we have been working on writing imaginative and persausive texts and refining our skills in sentence structure, rereading, editing and using interesting vocabulary. This term we are reading the novel – Bridge to Terribitha, which we will be incorporing a STEM challenge, summaries, persausive and imaginative writng and a variety of fun and interesting activities to go with the book. In Mathematics, we are building competency in 4 and 5 digit addition and subtraction with trading and learning how to solve word problems. In geograpghy, we are learning about how the environment shapes places and identifying the natural features of Australia. For science, we are investigating Earth’s place in space – this will coinside with the plantarium incursion coming to our school. We are looking forward to a fabulous and busy Term 2.

CORAL News

Mathematics – Students in Coral have been building their competency with using subtraction strategies and the formal algorithm. This has been complimented with games to develop students understanding of mathematical processes and foster a zest for learning.

Literacy – Coral have been building on their imaginative and persuasive writing through a range of contexts. Our Quickwrites during the morning allow students minds to run free as they explore topics and visual prompts. During extended writing tasks, coral have begun to use evidence from readings and rich classroom discussions to inform their arguments. Their imaginative writing has included building a sense of the characters, while emphasising the value of creative ideas.

Coral have started an investigation of how environments shape places as the Geography focus for Term 2. When exploring the super continent from 200 million years ago, students have posed wonderful questions leading to interesting discussions.

Coral have been particularly fond of a ‘Capture the Flag’ style game that has been introduced. Students have an active role of defending or attacking and are required to communicate effectively with their peers to collect objects from the opposition team without being tagged. Running, dodging, stepping and weaving are valuable skills in this game, (sometimes not as important as planning and being sneaky).

MAGENTA News

At the end of Term 1, students created wonderful dioramas about a Natural Disaster. I was very impressed with the variety and quality of the projects. And the speeches and power points and poster were fantastic.

This term, there are many wonderful things planned. We will be reading ‘Storm Boy’ and completing tasks during Literacy. It is a classic story and I’m sure the students will enjoy. A number of students are completing extension spelling lists this term. There are some absolute super spellers in Magenta.

We will be using critical and creative thinking skills during maths more this term. There are some great mathemagicians who need to stretch their mathematical minds. Students will be participating in Maths Olympiad. I will send home more information about this at a later date.

AVID strategies are being introduced this term. Students will complete a daily diary where they write in the daily agenda, set goals and can be more organised and become more responsible learners, having all books ready for the day. There are some wonderful strategies in reading to assist students’ understanding of what they have read. All students in Magenta are great readers but comprehension of the complex texts they are reading can sometimes be difficult. This is one aspect we’ll be working on this term.

AQUA News

We had a fabulous response to last terms homework task with the majority of students completing some amazing dioramas. In the last week of term we went on a ‘Gallery Walk’ where we were able to see the dioramas that students from other classes had created.

Last term we also started ‘Better Buddies’. Each Year 6 student is partnered up with a Kindergarten student and we meet once a week to complete a variety of activities. Our class (Aqua) is buddied up with Miss Dewar’s Kindergarten class (Green). Both the Kindergarten and Year 6 students love meeting up with their buddy. Some students even traded their Dojo Points to purchase classroom or playground swap, from the last PBL reward menu, to have some extra time with their buddy.

This term we have already started Peer Mediation. At lunch and recess, four students head down to the K-2 playground to establish and monitor different activities. Their role is to assist students who may be experiencing minor, easy to fix problems. The peer mediation roster changes each week to ensure all students have the opportunity to be a peer mediator.

LIME News

Big Write and VCOP

Lime has been working on improving their writing skills through an exciting new program. Students have been learning how to produce their best piece of writing through engaging games and creative lessons that showcase the talents of all students. Below is a few of our students completing a ‘Big Write’. The LED candles and classical music in the background helps create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

Term 1 Homework

We had an impressive looking room last term thanks to the incredible dioramas that students made for their homework task. It was fantastic to see the excitement students displayed when they shared with their peers their dioramas and explained how they were made. Accompanying these impressive visual models were some informative and well researched speeches. Lime loved listening to everyone share information on their chosen natural disaster and certainly learnt a lot about the cause and effect of a range of natural disasters.

Better Buddies

One of the most exciting times for Lime was meeting our new buddies in kindergarten for the first time. We are buddied up with Blue (Miss Derry) and students quickly formed positive relationships with their new friends. Lime found it rewarding to help out our younger students in the classroom and have enjoyed being role models to the youngest students at KVPS.

NAIDOC Oz Tag Gala Day for Wednesday, Week 10

On Wednesday, 3rd July (Week 10 of Term 2) our school will be participating in the 2019 NAIDOC Oz Tag Gala Day in celebration of NAIDOC Week. The day will include a girls and boys round robin of Oz Tag against primary schools in the local area. This should be a fun day and students will have the opportunity to see cultural performances, play Oz Tag and connect with family and friends. A barbecue lunch will be provided for students. The NRL will be assisting on the day. We look forward to celebrating the culture and talent of the local community.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Early Intervention

It has been a pleasure this term to get to know our new preschool students and their families! We are developing knowledge of the students’ skills and interests and are planning play activities to extend their development. These activities are planned to develop students’ fine and gross motor skills, communication, social capabilities, cognitive abilities and independence. A variety of indoor and outdoor activities are offered each week.

Ruby

Ruby class has had an incredible start to the year. We have created a Great Artesian Basin in a bottle as part of our science unit on droughts and floods. Our flooding simulation made from Lego and sand was a huge hit. Maths saw us making 3D shapes from magnets with some very interesting people holding them together. Mrs Maxwell has been exploring writing with the class, creating new adventures. Ruby has also enjoyed the swimming carnival where Jack C made it to the Zone swimming to represent the school.

Emerald

Wow! How fast has this term gone?

Emerald class began the New Year with not only a new teacher, Ms O’Donoghue, but also a class pet. The students were extremely excited to welcome ‘Lizabeth Minikin’, a pygmy bearded dragon to their classroom. Lizabeth spends a lot of time helping the students with their class work and the students enjoy her calming presence in the classroom. The responsibility of caring for Lizabeth has been taken on by all the students and they like to be involved in preparing her food and cleaning her enclosure. This responsibility of caring for an animal has had a positive impact on the students in Emerald.

Throughout the term students in Emerald have been investigating the properties of plants and how they grow. The students have germinated seeds and nurtured them through to seedlings before planting them into large pots to watch them grow. The students have been intrigued by the differences in size and shape of varying seeds and how they can germinate without being planted in soil. To explore how nutrients move through plants, the students observed the transpiration process as coloured water was drawn through celery stalks to their leaves. The students are enthusiastic to nurture their plants into maturity and harvest the results of their persistent care.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Fun in Stage 1

1MT have been researching sloths after gaining interest from reading the text, ‘The Sloth Who Came to Stay’ by Margaret Wild. Students investigated what they do, how they survive, where they live and some very interesting facts. They composed a diary entry from the perspective of one of the characters in the text to explain why slowing down in life is pleasant. Miss Turton and Mrs McPherson were very proud of all of their hard work! 1MT also completed the STEM challenge for this term of building a house. They did a great job of designing and improving on their houses. Keep up the hard work 1MT rock stars!

1K have been deeply engaged, focused and have enjoyed their learning. We have continued to study a weekly story book each week that focuses on a range of concepts. Our recent focus text was "Bird Builds a Nest" by Martin Jenkins. This book explores the struggles and achievements of a bird building a nest using pushing and pulling forces. Students made thoughtful comments and statements about how clever birds are, using only their beak to build a nest. That led 1K into the practical experience of collecting twigs, sticks and softer materials for each student to build their own nest. Well done 1K.

1/2R have been reading Spork, Spoon and Chopsticks. We compared the characters in each book and discussed how the authors gave them human qualities known as ‘personification’. Students then imagined they were one of the characters and wrote postcards to another character. We enjoyed CODE RED day. Students wore red to raise awareness about dyslexia, and made paper planes. We went outside and threw our paper planes to see how far they could go. In maths, we made some 3D objects from toothpicks and mini marshmallows and then created our own shapes.

2M have focused on our English text ‘Chester and Gil’ by Carol Faulkner and Ann James this term. The students have been amazed and inspired by our new class pets; one black and one orange and white goldfish. We have been busy making a poster with information for people looking to buy and keep goldfish as pets. Students complemented their writing with a fantastic watercolour artwork. The artwork focused on lines and colour so that the fish looked more genuine and convincing to their audience.

2/3S have been working on creating 3D models using pipe cleaners! They had to model the object by bending and twisting the pipe cleaners to create the same amount of vertices and edges. Well done!

2BR had a great time building houses with recycled materials for our Term 4 STEM challenge. Students worked cooperatively to design and create some very impressive houses. It was more challenging than we expected so we are looking forward to refining our designs when we work with our Stage 2 buddy class to complete the challenge again.

Some of our Stage 1 students have had the opportunity to participate in the 2 week intensive swim school at Mingara. It has been great to watch students improving their swimming skills whilst enjoying themselves too! Teachers and community members have mentioned how well behaved our students have been. Well done on showing your STAR values KVPS!

5/6B's News - Term 4

5/6B’s start to Term 4!

5/6B has had a fantastic start to Term 4. We began the term reflecting on our individual goals and creating a new class motto.

“Teamwork makes the Dream work”.

We enjoyed taking part in ‘Day for Dyslexia’ last Tuesday and learning about some of the famous people who have Dyslexia. We worked together to design and construct paper planes for the day. We had great fun flying them from our balcony.

One of our favourite parts of last term was when we walked or ran a mile. This term we are extended our fitness challenge and going outside two times a week to complete the most laps within 15 minutes. We have walked over 20km already as a class this Semester.

Last week we enjoyed experimenting with colour and paint and created some amazing free hand artworks for Gulung Fest.

5/6B have been working on descriptive language and describing characters based on appearance and attributes. Below are some of the descriptions we wrote about the staff at KVPS.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Stage 2 at Camp Toukley!

Stage 2 had an awesome time at Camp Toukley last term. Students got to participate in a range of activities including canoeing, the giant swing, BMX riding, orienteering, the high ropes course and they made some damper in a bush cooking class. The teachers also had a fantastic time with a few of them getting the opportunity to take a wild ride on the giant swing! On our last night of camp, we got to chill out in front of a large campfire whilst roasting marshmallows.

Thank you to all the students who attended and showed beautiful manners. A BIG thank you to the amazing staff who came along!

Wow, our Library had a sensational Term 2!

A huge thank you to wonderful P&C who assisted me in purchasing some new colourful, vibrant and dynamic soft furnishings for our Library! Our Library has now been transformed into a future-focused learning space where our learners can fully emerge themselves into the world of literature.

Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2:

Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 have been participating in a Author Study this term. Across each week we have been reading books by Julia Donaldson. We've read 'The Gruffalo', 'The Gruffalo's Child', 'The Scarecrow's Wedding', 'Room On the Broom', 'A Squash and Squeeze', 'Stick Man' and 'Zog and the Flying Doctor'. Each week we have created a different response to text, with students across the Stage producing quality work samples. It has been sensational to see all students thoroughly engaged in the select reading each week.

Years 3 to 6:

Stage 2 and 3 have been learning all about coding! Students have learnt simple block coding to program selected games. In the beginning of the term, students started to use block coding to code their classmates to create simple instructions. Once we had mastered that, we moved onto using the website, Hour of Code. Over these past few weeks, students have used the website to code some popular games, such as Minecraft, Flappy Bird and Star Wars. We even borrowed the Coding Mice from Mrs Beemster and created our own program!

Write to Win:

Last term's Write to Win was a huge success! Students who entered had to write a narrative about a character who was in space. It is so fantastic to see many of our younger students putting their entries in and practicing developing their writing skills.

Book Week:

Students are becoming excited about the upcoming Term 3 Book Week celebrations, with lots of our senior students already asking me about our school's Book Week decoration theme! Being top secrete ... you will just have to wait Killarney Vale!!

A huge thank you to the brilliant community members going the extra mile to provide our students with the best Book Week, I couldn't achieve it without you!!

I am happy to announce that Book Week will be celebrated in Week 5 of next term, starting on Monday 20th, August and finishing on Thursday 23rd, August.

During our Book Week celebrations, our library will once again be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair. During library lessons students will peruse the books and will write down their book choice on a wish list. More information will be published in the next coming weeks.

Stage 1 Term 2 - 2018

What we have been up to!

Stage 1 have made a fantastic start the term. We have settled back into class routines and are working hard with all the key learning areas of reading, writing, maths, geography, science, sport and creative arts.

Norah Head Light House excursion!

Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 went on a journey to the Norah Head Lighthouse. Wow, what a trip it was. Each group moved through a range of experiences and activities from the minute we got there until it was time to jump on the bus back to school. We climbed the mighty Norah Head Light House, hiked through an incredible nature walk, marched along three amazing beaches, had a very competitive sand castle building competition, investigated the rock platform ticking of all sorts of sea creatures and objects and sketched the beautiful Light House. What a day it was!

Super Star day

Stage 1 had an Absolute blast on the week 5 and 10 super star reward day. Students enjoyed using their Dojo points to buy many rewards such as: Movie and popcorn in the hall, Friday Fun, Mufti, Classroom swap, cap pass, free time, tech time and more.

Egglympics

Egglympics, what an awesome and enjoyable event. Students moved out to the infant's oval to participate in a circuit of 8 exhilarating Easter egg races, games and events.

1K Produced outstanding writing about the story book "Zog". All 1K students participated in a shared discussion about Zog, talking about what Zog learnt at his Dragon school. The coherence, structure and detail in the students writing was impressive. Well done.

As most of the stage 1 classes did, 1K tried their absolute best during Mrs Beemster's visit with the coding mice. The students enjoyed coding the mice, enabling them to move through tricky tracks with forward, left, right and backwards movements.

2M have been experimenting with coding! They instructed a mouse to move around the board and collect the cheese at the end. They did this by inputting directions using arrow keys on the back of the mouse. Students recognised a First Attempt In Learning (FAIL) when it happened and attempted to improve their coding next time. It was a great lesson with all students engaged and having fun!

1/2R In Week 3, Stage One students participated in a Central Coast Health initiative "Vege Adventure". Each day, students received a sticker and 2 points for bringing any fruit or vegetable of a particular colour in. The stickers completed a rainbow over the week. Well done to the 14 students in 1/2R who received 10 points!

1MT have shown their place value understanding by making their own MAB Monsters and calculating their total.

2BR have had an awesome start to Term 2. We helped clean up Killarney Vale and made it shine. We have had a great time learning how to code the new robotic mice. We have improved ou problem-solving skills and we are looking forward to some new challenges in coding.

Kindergarten have had an extremely busy semester and they have loved every moment of it!

Already, Kindergarten have been involved in some exciting learning experiences such as; Obstacool, Super STAR days, Clean up Killarney Vale, Bus Safety Visits from Mr Gumnuts, Pirate Day and loads of fun classroom learning.

In Literacy, students are continuing to develop their reading, writing and communication skills. In Mathematics, we have been enjoying hands-on activities to explore mathematical problems. In History students are learning about their own history and that of their family.

We have recently introduced robotics and coding into Kindergarten and the children are exploring how to programme a set of instructions to tell a robot what to do. Kindergarten have thoroughly enjoyed using our brand-new robots!

Clean up Killarney Vale!

Last week Stage 2 took to the school to clean up Killarney Vale! 2/3S, 4/5N, 4B, 3G and 3/4W spent lots of time discussing why it is important to clean up Killarney Vale and how we can prevent the playground from ever getting messy!

Students across the stage then brought in plastic bags and gloves from home to aid in a hygienic clean up of Killarney Vale! It was incredible timing for the event as it was right before our very successful Mother's Day Breakfast.

It was great to see such a clean school celebrating the incredible achievements of all the significant women in our students lives! A big thank you to all of the families who contributed bags and gloves for our Killarney Vale clean up!

Early Intervention

It has been pleasure this term to get to know our new preschool students and their families! We are developing knowledge of the students' skills and interests and are planning play activities to extend their development. These activities are planned to develop students' fine and gross motor skills, communication, social capabilities, cognitive abilities and independence. A variety of indoor and outdoor activities are offered each week.

2/6T

2/6 T have had a very full term. We have thoroughly enjoyed our unit on Natural Science with the students exploring the local environment. We have learnt all about life cycles really focussing on the turtle. Seems to be that's the class's favourite animal at the moment. The art has been fantastic, with the students creating a turtle out of paddle pop sticks and wool and then creating a turtle nest with eggs from sand and recycled egg cartons. Swimming Carnival was exciting with some of our students competing in the races. Egglyimpics was enjoyed by most especially the Easter eggs.

2/6C

This term, 2-6C have been collecting old lawn mowers as part of a STEM project to recycle them into billy carts. The students demonstrated their skills of pulling apart the engines and identifying the parts that drive the engine. We hope to have our push cart project completed by the end of term 1. The students have participated in a variety of Creative Arts experiences including superhero drawing, loom band patterning and dance. On Friday afternoons 2-6C have been cooking and completing Science experiments on alternate weeks. Students jointly plan these experiences and offer suggestions that have included a personal favourite chicken pasta recipe, scrolls and the excitement of creating bottle rockets. Welcome to Kindergarten 2018

With Miss Dewar, Miss Train and Miss Derry

Kindergarten students have made an excellent start to their first year of school. Students have settled into class routines, have been learning the school STAR rules, and have been getting to know our classmates and listening closely to what everyone has to say. This term in literacy groups we are beginning to learn how to read and write. In Mathematics we have been learning about the numbers 0 to 20, 2D and 3D shapes and adding and subtracting. We have started dancing and are learning about safety at school, home and on the roads. Kindergarten students have enthusiastically participated in every activity inside the classroom and out and have shown perseverance and determination when faced with new challenges. Kindergarten especially enjoyed participating in their first STEM challenge this term. The Kindergarten teachers are very proud at how well they have settled in to school life! We look forward to the rest of the year with these wonderful 2018 Kindergarten students.

What we have been up to!

Stage 1 have made a fantastic start to 2018. We have settled into class routines and are working hard with reading, writing, maths, geography, science, sport and creative arts. In English, each stage 1 class has been exploring the many concepts of reading and writing through a weekly book study.

Stage 1 have been working on Number concepts in Maths and are many hands on activities. So far we have explored the concepts of length, two and three-dimensional space, area, whole numbers, addition and subtraction.

Goal Setting!

Stage 1 teachers would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended our parent and teacher goal setting evening. It was great to meet new parents and families, while also discussing and setting achievable student goals for 2018.

1K enjoyed the ‘Build a Bridge' STEM challenge. We had great discussions about why some bridges were strong and how others were weak. We are looking forward to the next STEM challenge.

2M have been focussing on our geography, particularly about beaches. We have been discussing natural and man-made features at the beach, and are presenting our talking topics about our favourite place. 2M have been working hard creating master pieces of art inspired by ‘Why I Love Australia' by Bronwyn Bancroft.

1/2R have been busy during literacy group time. We have used playdough and magnetic letters to make our spelling words, have done lots of writing and have enjoyed using the iPads. Our favourite activity so far has been writing letters to each other at our writing station.

1MT have been enthusiastic and highly interested in geography this term. We have been investigating the human made and natural features of a beach. Students in 1MT have been reading, producing amazing writing and have completed outstanding artworks of different beaches. Mrs McPherson and Miss Turton have been astonished with the efforts 1MT have been putting into their work.

2/3S have also been enjoying the STEM lesson that has been set to all students across the school. We participated with 5/6E and the students worked extremely well with their older peers to create a strong and sturdy bridge!

What we have been up to!

Stage 2 have had a wonderful start to the 2018 school year. We have settled into class routines and are working hard on interesting units of work. In English, we have been reading the novel "Wonder" and other picture books that explore the concept of belonging and kindness. We have been working on Number concepts in Maths and are enjoying taking part in a daily "Math Ignition". Also, we have been learning about the features of Australia and explored the language used in the poem "My Country" by Dorothea Mackellar. Students have enjoyed participating in weekly dance sessions in the hall for PE.

Goal Setting!

This is a fantastic time to create achievable and timed goals for our students in 2018. Stage 2 teachers are looking forward to our Goal Setting afternoon this week and meeting our new families!

We are also looking forward to learning about cyber safety this week. Please join us for the parent information sessions.

What Has Been Happening in Stage 3?

Science Update

Our brainy scientists in Stage 3 are studying energy this term. They are building on their knowledge of electricity from Term 3 to learn about how we generate and use energy. Stage 3 will be learning about sustainable energy sources and the role they will play in our lives. We hope that one of our budding young scientists will be able to solve the world's energy problems in the future.

Geography Focus

This term as part of our Geography unit, Stage 3 students have been learning about bush fires and the impact they can have on individuals, communities, and the environment. We have been focusing on the causes of bush fires, how to protect our homes, arson and significant Australian bush fires that have occurred in the past.

On the 17^th of November, Stage 3 students will be holding a bush fire exhibition in the school hall to showcase their learning and share some resources they will be making with our community. We have also invited the Rural Fire Brigade from Berkley Vale to join us on the day and answer any questions we may have. More information about our exhibition will be sent home closer to the date.

STEM Activities

This term Stage 3 have participated in a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects. This project-based learning allows students to gain and apply knowledge through planning, completing and reflecting on tasks. Students complete activities that rely on creative and critical thinking. Examples of these engaging activities were;

- Creating circuits and exploring the flow of electricity through these circuits.

- Newspaper buildings – Using newspaper and sticky tape, students created a 30cm tall tower that could hold the weight of 3 books.

- Spaghetti and marshmallow towers – Students used dried spaghetti and small and large marshmallows to create the largest tower possible.

- Dome Challenge – Students had to create a dome using only Jubes and toothpicks. The done needed to hold some maths text books.

Our robotics course will start again in the coming weeks during lunch. We look forward to seeing the results of the collaboration between our stage 3 students.

Student Leadership

The leadership process for 2018 has started. All of Year 5 participated in Leadership Training last week with Mr Clarke and Miss Isgit. At the end of the day students had the opportunity to nominate each other for a student leadership position for next year. The students who had a successful nomination are busy writing their speeches which will be presented to Year 5 in Week 5. All students involved were given a copy of the Leadership Policy which outlines all the important dates.

Support Unit News

Our Early Intervention students have been busy learning the skills required for Kindergarten next year. They have been learning to write their name, play in a small group and be independent in their self-help skills. Students have delighted in using the Smartboard, to develop turn-taking skills and participate in music activities.

The students from both the 2/5T and 1/6S classes enjoyed their intensive swim program at the end of last term. Students practised very hard on learning to swim and being safe in and around water. They especially enjoyed their water safety day when they wore their pyjamas into the pool.

In our ED class we have been very busy working hard on our night and day unit of work. Students looked at their shadows and the shadow that the sun makes on earth, creating night and day. This term we welcome two new students to our class Mark and Tylar.

The students from 2/5T have had some wonderful experiences this year. The zoo excursion was a highlight where we got to check out Taronga Zoo's many animals. We have also completed an amazing unit of work on the Rainforest. We turned out classroom into a rainforest with all the animals and plants. The students loved learning about the endangered animals and what we can do to protect them. This term we intend to turn our classroom into an underwater paradise.

Stage 2 has had a fabulous start to term 3 with the first 5 weeks full of learning and special events! We had our Science Education Week Open Day and our PBL Reward Day.

Classes are busily working on their whole school concert item ready for week 9. We look forward to seeing our families and friends come and watch us shine on stage.

English –

This term, stage 2 students are completing an author study on Julia Donaldson. We are completing interesting activities and wonderful pieces of writing about four of her books – The Highway Rat, Room on the Broom, Stickman & Super-worm. The students have loved reading quality literature and have been learning to compose informative, persuasive and imaginative texts linked to their book of the fortnight. All of our grammar and art activities have come from the focus story so students are really engaged and immersed in the book.

3W has been writing information reports about Earthworms. We have been learning to use speech marks, commas and descriptive language to make our writing interesting.

3G has been writing about Super-worm and Stickman. We have been focusing on using paragraphs, direct speech, editing and rereading. We have created some amazing artwork to go with our writing.

4R has been writing narratives about Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. We have been learning about synonyms and how to use them to make our writing more interesting.

3/4T have been writing imaginative stories about the travels and adventures of Stick Man and Super-worm. We have been learning to use synonyms to increase our vocabulary and make our writing more appealing to our audience

Students have been examining European exploration in Australia including the impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. What a busy year we have had so far in Kindergarten!

We have been working hard to learn our letter sounds and sight words in Literacy Groups; and the numbers zero to twenty in Mathematics.

We have had lots of fun during PDHPE and Sport lessons.

We skipped until we dropped in the "Jump Rope For Heart".

We have done some clay modelling, cooking, and drama; and have gone to the computer lab with our buddies.

We made hats and went in the Easter hat parade with our buddies.

We had fun being scientists on Education Week Open day.

We had a visit from a published author, Judy Townsend.

Library Bookworm – Term 3

Our students are getting excited as Term 3 marks the celebrations of Book Week!

The theme for Book Week this year is, Escape to Everywhere.

I am happy to announce that Book Week will be celebrated in Week 6 of this term, starting on Monday 21^nd August and finishing on Thursday 24^th August.

Our school is planning some fantastic activities for Book Week! Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

During our Book Week celebrations, our library will also be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair. During library lessons students will peruse the books and will write down their book choice on a wish list.

Students will have the opportunity to purchase books throughout their library lesson, during lunch times, and before and after school.

Cash, personal cheques and EFTPOS facilities will all be accepted.

Parents are most welcome to visit the library with their child from Monday to Thursday during this week between 8:30am – 9:00am and 3:05m – 3:30pm.

Each book sold at our Book Fair benefits our school and our kids!

Book in a Box

Our popular Book in a Box activity is back for 2017! Decorate a box to represent your favourite fictional escape place and fill it with pictures and objects that represent scenes of your selected book. Drop off your Book in a Box to me, no later than Wednesday 16^th August.

Judy Townsend – Author Visit

The very talented Judy Townsend is returning to KV on Thursday 10^th and Friday 11^th of August! Judy will speak about her six books and will talk to the children about the value of reading, the editing and publication process and the important role of picture books in the development of reading. All the money raised to see Judy goes towards our school's purchasing of quality literature from the author.

Stage 2 News

This term 3G have been very busy, we have been practising NAPLAN (Literacy and Numeracy skills). We have been reading lots of books about differences, emotions and why it is important to accept our differences and be nice and caring towards everyone! This week we have been reading Elmer - they designed their own Elmer's (which were all different and amazing)! They worked with another student, who they usually wouldn't work with. They discussed their similarities and differences and worked together as a team to write their stories! It was a proud teacher moment to see them work together and help each other write their stories! What an amazing bunch of students!

Throughout the term 3/4T have been reading Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. We have enjoyed creating artwork inspired by Harry Potter and have had the pleasure to display our work in the office foyer. We viewed a picture that was found on the internet and discussed the colours and shades the artist used to create mood and meaning. Using this knowledge the students then recreated the picture and the results were wonderful.

Also in 4R we have had a great time studying Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Students have been reading along each day and creating writing pieces based off of the book. Students have also created these fantastic silhouettes of the Hogwarts castle.

3F have made a fantastic start to their primary schooling career in term 1 2017 showing the potential these students possess for the remainder of the year. 3F have been working extremely hard across all KLA's consolidating information to then transform and produce into quality work. Students have been engaged in exciting and engaging interactive aspects of literacy and numeracy which looks to continue as the year progresses. I am very proud of the effort and work these students are producing.

Our Monitors are an enthusiastic group who have settled into their roles perfectly. These past few weeks, our Monitors have been learning to be librarians. Each student has been practicing placing books into Alphabetical Order through the Fiction sections of the library. They are doing a fantastic job and I very much look forward to our year together.

2017 Premier's Reading Challenge

Our students are once again participating in the 2017 PRC! K-6 have been reading a selected PRC title from the list every week, and then using the text to guide library lessons discussions. Our students are loving being exposed to quality literature from a variety of authors.

Stage 2 – Hector's World

Stage 2 have been participating in a program called Hector's World. The online program uses animations to reinforce to viewers how to stay safe online! The program has been an ideal inclusion to library sessions and has had a major impact in highlighting positive online behaviour. Stage 2 has learnt what personal information is, why it is important to keep this information safe and how to protect our online identities. We also discussed the importance of reading a website's privacy and terms of use statements.

Write to Win

March's Write to Win projects ends this Friday 24^th March.

The project was created to give students an opportunity to develop their creative and imaginative writing skills. All students who enter will receive a participation certificate at our weekly assembly. The next Write to Win will be out early next term.

The Support Unit classes have all settled back into school routines nicely.

The EI class with Ms Watson and Ms Thomas have been enjoying fine motor activities and are developing their listening skills and ability to follow instructions.

The MC class with Ms Simpson and Mrs Hessel and the ED class with Mrs Pattison and Mrs Travis are very excited about attending the swimming carnival and the Surf Education programme later this term. We have been working on how to make and keep positive friendships and celebrated friendship on Valentine's Day with some fabulous art works.

Stage 2 News

This week Stage 2 had a blast at Sporting Schools Team Building day on the oval and also a fantastic Waratah's Rugby Clinic.

We were all lucky enough to be involved in the Team Building day which encouraged student cooperation whilst playing a variety of fun team games. Students participated in a many fun and exciting challenges such as egg and spoon race, four way tug of war, and giant connect four. The sportsmanship on display was fantastic as students worked together on many challenges to accomplish a common goal.

Stage two also participated in a Waratah's Rugby Clinic which aimed to provide students with an introduction to the game of rugby union. The students learnt about some of the skills needed to play rugby such as catching, kicking, passing, evading, and space awareness whilst being actively engaged in a variety of mini games and activities.

Everyone had an amazing time learning about teamwork, sportsmanship, and gaining new skills whilst being physically active with friends. What a great day!

Paul Jennings – Connected Classroom Author Presentation

A group of Stage 2 students used 4P's Connected Classroom to view an author presentation by Paul Jennings. During the presentation Paul discussed how he wrote, what he loves to read and what inspired him to become an author. Paul encouraged our children to dream big and achieve everything and anything they have plans for!

Students loved hearing and seeing snippets from his new novel, "The Unforgettable What's His Name". Our children were highly engaged throughout the presentation, with their behaviour to be celebrated! All comments received from those who attended were extremely positive, here are just a few:

Stage 1 - Term 4 News

Mrs Gordine, Mrs McPherson, Mrs Britt, Mrs Price-Pahulu, Mr Smith, Mr King and Mrs Beemster would all like to welcome you to our Stage One news for Semester Two.

During Semester Two Stage One students have been working hard to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Students are producing amazing pieces of writing, including, imaginative, informative and persuasive text.

In Term 4, Stage One have begun investigating the concept of change through the science unit "Up down and all round".

Last term we attended The Australian Reptile Park. The students displayed positive engagement in all aspects of the park including the free roaming activities and the reptile shows. Our students were exceptionally well behaved! Well done KVPS!

Earlier in Semester Two, we participated in the KVPS's "Olympathon". Each class moved through a circuit of fun activities.

Book Week was one of the best KVPS had ever seen! The library looked absolutely spectacular, decorated in an Alice in Wonderland theme. All our students looked fantastic on the day of the Book Parade!

Mr King and Miss Thomas continue to run the Didge and Dance Groups. The Aboriginal dance group will be performing at the Central Coast Gulang fest at the Entrance High School, on Wednesday 23^rd November at 5pm.

News from K/4S

K/4S participated in an intensive 10 day learn to swim program at Berkeley Vale Pool. We learnt many skills in the pool including floating and putting our faces in the water. Every day we learnt about being safe in the pool and at the beach. We know to swim between the red and yellow flags at the beach and always have a grown up watching us. On the last day we swam in our pyjamas, so we would know what to do if we fell in the pool with our clothes on. Everyone had a wonderful time.

News from 2/4P

2/4P have had a fabulous start to Term 4. We have settled back into routines and are all working extremely hard to achieve our individual goals. Term 3 was very busy with our Stage 2 students attending camp. The highlights of camp for us were the low ropes, giant swing and canoeing. For many of our students this was their first time at camp and we all had a blast.

We have been studying a variety of artists in Creative Arts this semester. We have looked at and painted our own Kandinsky, Van Goth, Monet and Macke artworks.

For our Science units this term Kindergarten have been involved in activities which investigated the basic needs for survival of animals and humans. The students were able to look at pet guinea pigs which were bought into the classroom and discussed how to look after family pets.

Stage One explored the growth of a range of living things and investigated the growth of mealworms under different temperature conditions. Some were placed in the refrigerator while others were kept in the classroom.

With our visit from Henny Penny Hatching for two weeks all classes were given the opportunity to watch chicks hatch in an incubator and were able to handle the chicks. They learnt about the life cycle of a number of animals, reptiles and insects.

Term 3 has been an exciting, action-packed Term. So far, we have had a surf-safety talk, watched our new classroom being constructed, dressed up as our favourite characters for book week, participated in the KVPS Olympathon and have been eagerly watching our baby chickens hatch!

In Literacy, we are focusing on using expression and fluency when reading, and are using more interesting words to improve our writing. In mathematics, we are so clever; we are learning to count by twos. We continue to enjoy our hands-on activities during group time. We are adding and subtracting, and working on our combinations to 10.

Welcome Mr Flint

Mr Flint has joined Mr Townsend with Year 3 to form a wonderful team teaching classroom until our demountable arrives. Mrs Britten also now has her complete Year 4 class. Students have adapted seamlessly into their new routines and are working beautifully together. A visit to these classrooms shows students highly engaged and hard at work.

Camp

Stage 2 students are getting ready for camp 2016 and the excitement is building. We are looking forward to the camp adventures that await us.

Students will be travelling to Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Camp at Gwandalan in Week 8 of this term on the 5th, 6th and 7th of September. Blessed with a natural beauty and perfect water conditions year round, instructor-led activities like canoeing is popular with students. Other adventures include the flying fox and giant swing.

Remember, payments for camp need to be finalised by Friday the 26th of August.

NSW Netball Cup

NSW Netball Cup

On Thursday 28th July, Killarney Vale Public School participated in the N.S.W Netball Cup. The weather was amazing and we had two very enthusiastic mixed teams ready to have fun. Team 1 (The Panthers) played 4 games, won 2 and lost 2. Team 2 (The Tigers) also played 4 games, 1 was a draw and they won 2 and lost 1. The sportsmanship and team spirit was a credit to both teams. A big thank you to the parents that were there to cheer on our teams. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Well done Killarney Vale!

Children's Book Week 2016

Welcome back to Term 3!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday.

The kids are getting excited as Term 3 marks the celebrations of Book Week!

The theme for Book Week this year is, Australia! Story Country. I am happy to announce that Book Week will be celebrated in Week 6 of this term, starting on Monday 22^nd August and will finish on Thursday 25^th August.

Our school is planning some fantastic activities for Book Week! Stay tuned for more information.

During our Book Week celebrations our library will also be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair. During library lessons students will peruse the books and will write down their book choice on a wish list.

Parents might use this wish list to pre-order books and avoid disappointment if the books sell out quickly. Orders can also be made on the day. Scholastic usually fills the orders within one to two weeks.

Students will have the opportunity to purchase books throughout their library lesson, during lunch times, and before and after school.

Cash, personal cheques and EFTPOS facilities will all be accepted.

Parents are most welcome to visit the library with their child from Monday to Thursday between 8:30am – 9:00am and 3:05m – 3:30pm.

Each book sold at our Book Fair benefits our school and our kids!

Stage 1 News - Term 2

Mrs Gordine, Mrs McPherson, Mrs Britt, Mrs Price-Pahul, Mr Smith, Mr King and Mrs Beemster would all like to welcome you to our Stage 1 news for Term 2.

We have been having a fantastic time improving our maths skills, reading so many books, becoming expert writers, investigating different mixtures and exploring the places around us both near and far.

Year Two were very excited to have the opportunity to participate in their first Cross Country and Athletics carnivals. Students had a great time challenging themselves with some different types of sport activities.

Earlier in the term we got to spoil our mums, grandmas and aunties at our Mothers Day Morning. We made them some breakfast and pampered them.

We had a lot of fun dressing like pirates and walking the plank for Talk Like a Pirate day.

During NAIDOC week we got to watch a cleansing ceremony, performed by Terry, an aboriginal elder. We also created beautiful artworks that were inspired by aboriginal dot paintings.

Mr King and Miss Thomas have been busy teaching the Didge and Dance group some new sounds and moves. They are excited to perform later in the year.

K/1G have been enjoying a variety of new games during maths groups.

1B read the Tin Forrest by Helen Ward, which inspired them to create some interesting artworks.

They have also been enjoying playing some new games during maths groups.

1M have been producing some fantastic writing. They use their word wall to make sure they're using interesting words.

They also created their own memory tree after reading the story Memory Tree by Britta Teckentrup.

1/2BK watched a dreamtime story called the Mimis. Students used oil pastels and paint to create a colourful artwork of the Mimis in the dessert.

They also went around Australia while reading the book Are We There Yet?

2P has also been busy creating some amazing artwork. They were inspired by the illustrations in The Dream of the Thylacine by Margaret Wild.

2/3S produced a fabulous Aboriginal art wall based around our NAIDOC Week activities. The students had a great time creating some spectacular art while learning about the Aboriginal culture.

Last Thursday we had our school Athletics Carnival. The weather was amazing and it was great to see so many parents supporting our students. A big congratulations to everyone who really tried hard all day. A big thanks to Mrs Beemster for organising such a great carnival. A special thank you to the Berkeley Vale High students who helped throughout the day. Good luck to the Zone Team who will represent our school with pride next term.

Last week a group of year 5 students headed over to The Entrance Campus with Mr Castles. All of the students had an amazing time and got to be part of some very exciting science experiments. It was a hands on opportunity for Year 5 students to learn more about science and the science facilities at high school. 2/4 P have had a wonderful start to 2016. We have worked well as a team and all students are engaged in their learning programs. We are enjoying learning about the solar system this term and have created some interesting mnemonics to remind us of the positions of the planets from the sun.

During Term 1 we completed many beautiful woodwork designs using paddle pop sticks. Many of our family members received a beautiful trinket box designed and created by us. This term, Mrs Travis is teaching us how to French knit and a little competition has developed to see who can create the longest knitting.

Some of our class members entered into the Cross Country and Tane and AJ made it through to the Zone Cross Country carnival. What an achievement!

We look forward to sharing more of our successes throughout the year. Mrs Pattison and Mrs Travis.

In K-4S we have been working on our science unit of Living things. We saw how water travels up the stem of plants by using red food dye in water and a celery stick as you can see we ended up with red celery. We have continued to look at Community Workers and are now looking at the emergency services an when we need to use these services and what each one does for us.

We have read some very interesting and enjoyable books and are working towards our Premiers reading challenge. We all participated in the cross country and came back to class very tired from trying so hard. Each Friday we enjoy horse riding and have been able to go on trial rides as the weather has been so kind to us.

This week we have been looking at NAIDOC week and Reconcilation Day.

Netball 2016

PSSA Netball

On Monday Mrs Maxwell and the Girls Netball team headed off to Baker Park to compete in the PSSA Netball Knockout competition. The girls played 2 games, 1 against Brooke Avenue and the other against Wamberal Public School. The girls played with enthusiasm and demonstrated sportsmanship throughout the day. Unfortunately they were unable to come away with a win but they did work well as a team and tried their very best. We are looking forward to the Mixed Netball Cup which is coming up later in the year.

A big thank you to the parents that assisted with transport and encouragement on the day.

Stage 2- Term 1

What a busy and exciting term we have had. Time flies when you are growing and learning.

In Term one we settled into our classes and have been working hard to establish our routines.

RECENT EVENTS

Egglympics

Mrs Britten and our very capable KVPS leaders helped organise a memorable Easter Egglympics this year. As a lead up to the Easter week end students celebrated through various games and events. Everyone involved had an absolute ball. There were many laughs and it was inspiring to see classes working together in team events.

Star Voucher Day

On Star Voucher Day students had over 700 vouchers to use on the following rewards:

1. Classroom swap

2. Extra play with games on the playground

3. Mr Moxon's Monstrous Morning Tea

4. BYO Technology

5. Hall Frenzy with games in the hall

Students earned over 2800 star slips during Term One for outstanding behaviour both in the classroom and on the playground. Many students had more than one voucher to use on Voucher Day. Keep up the wonderful work KVPS students!

New Geography Curriculum

This year we have implemented the new Geography Syllabus which has replaced the old HSIE syllabus (Human Society in It's Environment)

Stage Two has been looking at 'The Earth's Environment' In this unit we have looked at a world map and discussed the equator and the northern and southern hemispheres. Students researched traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and traditions, looking in particular at how these relate to the earth and the land. This generated much discussion and interest from students.

CAKE STALLS

Finally, thank you to all those dedicated parents and students who provided cakes for our Stage Two cake stall recently. Cake stalls prove to be very popular and raise much needed funds for our Year Six fundraising account.

Library Lover's Day

Every year libraries all around Australia come together to celebrate this National event on the 14^th February! This special event aims to highlight the importance of visiting libraries, and borrowing their beloved collections.

At KVPS, we spoke about the importance of reading, and borrowing books on a regular basis. For the month of February, students borrowed books by some of our adored children's authors! Books by Roald Dahl, Andy Griffiths, J.K Rowling, Julia Donaldson, and Dr. Seuss were the popular borrowed choices.

For over 80 years, the School Banking program has been teaching Australian kids smart saving habits and life-long money skills.

To participate in the School Banking program, all your child needs is a Youthsaver account. Your child may already have a Youthsaver account, if so they are ready to participate in the program.

New to School Banking?

The School Banking program provides children with an opportunity to make deposits into their Youthsaver account at school each week. Students will receive a yellow Dollarmites wallet and deposit book to bring their deposit to school each week. The program is about how often your child makes deposits, not how much they deposit. Every deposit earns them a silver Dollarmites token, and once they've collected 10 tokens they can redeem for a reward. In the interest of fairness and encouraging the right savings behaviour, we ask students not to ‘pool' their tokens (i.e. use siblings' or friends' tokens).

It's easy to get started

To get your child started, you will need to set them up with a Youthsaver account – a savings account that has no monthly account fees or withdrawal fees. You can do this one of three ways.

Online

If you're an existing Commonwealth Bank customer, log on to netbank.com.au go to the ‘Offers and Apply' tab. Then click ‘Accounts' and ‘Youthsaver and School Banking'. You will need to have their birth certificate handy for identification purposes.

In branch

You can visit any Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for you and your child.

Banking day is every Monday. Students bring their yellow wallets directly to the office and place them into the slot in the counter at the front desk. Killarney Vale Public School P&C Association is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all members of the school community. This includes ensuring effective and positive communications in all mediums.

Policy Objectives

The Killarney Vale Public School P&C Association intends to utilise all forms of communication to promote the work of the P&C Association, the school and to engage community.

Responsibilities

The President and Secretary are responsible for the administration and moderating of all Killarney Vale Public School P&C Association social media.

Social media is defined as a group of online applications such as social networking sites, wikis, blogs, microblogs, video and audio sharing sites, and message boards that allow people to easily publish, share and discuss content.

Purpose of social media is to facilitate conversations in a dialogue, an opportunity to promote, listen, share, collaborate and respond to our colleagues and communities.

In using social media all P&C members agree to follow Killarney Vale Public School P&C Association policies including the Code of Conduct.

Members agree to be clear in representing the P&C Association. Where a member is not representing the P&C Association it should be made clear that comments are made by you as an individual. Members shall be mindful that your role with Killarney Vale Public School may create a connection between what you say online and the P&C Association itself. Where a member uses social media they shall represent the P&C Association well and be sure that the content published is consistent with expected professional standards.

Members will be polite and considerate in all social media activities. All parents and carers of children at the school and all citizens living within the boundaries of the school are eligible to be members of the P&C. An annual membership fee of .50 is payable to become a member of the Association. Click on the P&C Membership tab for the 2016 P&C Membership form.

Meetings

P&C meetings are a place to find out what is happening in the school, gain a better understanding about curriculum, school policies and activities, make a comment, raise a concern or ask a question, and get to know other parents. Our P&C meets on the 4th Thursday of each month during school term, usually commencing at 7.15pm. The AGM is held in conjunction with our March meeting.

Zone Swimming Carnival

Zone Swimming Carnival

Last week Mr Clarke and Mrs Walpole took the Killarney Vale Zone team to Mingara to compete. All of our swimmers did extremely well and achieved amazing results.

Killarney Vale Public School won the carnival and came away with two age champions. Congratulations to Ryan Vesper who is the boys 11yrs champion and Lillie Laidlaw who is the Girls 12/13yrs champion.

Goodluck to Lillie, Ryan, Oliver, Nolan, Jacinta, James, Rhianna and Hannah who will be representing our school at the Sydney North Carnival in a few weeks.

Stage 3 has been supporting the Kindergarten transition to school by assisting in the infants' playground. Their contributions have been greatly appreciated by all staff. Each Stage 3 class has a peer mediation duty every 3 weeks.

Welcome back to Term 4!

Last week we were very lucky to have an accomplished author visit our school for two days.

Students across K-6 came to the library and listened to Judy Townsend talk about the value of reading, the editing and publication process and the importance of picture books in the development of reading.

Our students were amazed when they saw the author's original manuscripts and illustration proofs.

Throughout each presentation, our students came up with some amazing quality questions! It was fantastic to see our students participate and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Before the author left she made a comment to me, about how outstanding our student's behaviour was. This didn't surprise me! Once again, we have proved "we are the best school on the Central Coast". Amazing work KVPS! I couldn't be prouder of you all!

Personally, I‘d like to thank all our wonderful families at KVPS! With the $2 raised, I was able to purchase 36 quality pictures books from the author. What a great school community we have! These books will be placed in our Picture Book section and will be used as a teacher's Literacy resource.

Please note that weekly borrowing will stop in Week 7 in preparation for Stocktake, so please check at home for any overdue books and kindly return them to the library.

Book Week Fun in Stage 2!

Stage 2 revelled in the fun, creativity and learning that Book Week provides. Students enjoyed dressing as their favourite character and parading their costume efforts in the hall. A huge congratulations to Miss Taylor who did an outstanding job during Book Week. The library looked amazing and all of the stage 3 students thoroughly enjoyed visiting the book fair. It was great to see so many stage 3 students getting involved and dressing up for Book Week. We had a fantastic time parading around with our Kindergarten buddies. It was great to see some of our teachers dressing up and getting involved.

This Thursday the 6th August Stage 2 will be holding a cake stall. Stage 2 students are encouraged to bring cakes, cookies, slices and other sweets.

All money rasied goes into our Student Parliament fundraising account for our World Vision child, Year 6 Farewell and end of year water activities.

Education Week

Science Day

Mrs Britten and our school leaders worked tirelessly to provide KVPS students with the very best opportunities to experience the wonders of science. Students participated in small groups and were able to visit the following science stations for hands on activities:

1. The Exploding Lunchbag

2. How to make slime 1

3. Soap powered boat

4. Static electricity

5. Play dough

6. How to make slime 2

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone while promoting the importance of science and inquiry in our world.

The fun didn't stop there.

Students also conducted science experiments in the classroom too.

3B and 3L made errupting volcanoes, 4/5BM investigated static electricity and 4P found out how to make a bouncy egg.

Gee science experiments are messy but definitely worth the fun!

Science Curriculum

Stage 2 CAMP

Stage 2 is counting down to camp at the end of this term. Excitement is building and the students are looking forward to the experience. Stage 2 camp will be held in the last week of term from the 16th September to the 18th September. More information will be coming home in the next few weeks about what to pack etc. Students will participate in; archery, canoeing, BMX riding, quad bikes, the flying fox, orienteering and the high ropes.

Camp provides students with opportunities to try new adventures, foster deeper and meaningful friendships and develop a greater sense of self and independance.

Paralympian Visit - Teigan Van Roosmalen

Last Friday 5/6E, Miss Walpole and Mr. Smith were treated to a very special presentation from a current Australian Paralympian, Teigan Van Roosmalen.

Teigan is a current Australian Paralympic athlete, world record holder and former winner of the Central Coast Young Achiever Award. Teigan lives with Ushers Syndrome which affects her vision and hearing.

Teigan presented an excellent and incredibly inspiring presentation including details of her competition wins. She also gave some very good advice for all of the students.

On behalf of 5/6E we would like to thank Teigan for taking the time out to visit 5/6E, we certainly learnt a lot!

Book Week: 24^th August – 27^th August

This year the Children's Book Council of Australia celebrates 70 years! To honour this occasion, this year's Book Week theme is ‘Books Light Up Our World' and during Book Week the Scholastic Book Fair will be returning to KVPS!

Book Character Parade - Tuesday 25^th August

Students will have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite Book Character and parade their outfit to the school! Start brainstorming some costuming ideas!

The boys' soccer team played last week against Brooke Avenue Public School at Pat Morely Oval. They were extremely excited to play and were keen to put to test all the skills that they had been learning in training! The boys started off well with some great passing which resulted in our first goal. The boys continued playing some great soccer and finished the match with a 9-2 win! A big congratulations to all the boys.

TERM 2 NEWS...

HOME READING, TALKING TOPICS AND HOMEWORK

Homework regularly goes home every Monday morning and is to be returned to school on Fridays. Students are to complete their homework sheet, a Mathletics or Reading Eggs activity and read for at least 10 minutes each night. Don't forget to register your book on your reading card (One book per night).

Talking Topics have been sent home and student are very busy preparing their presentations. We have been delighted with a range of posters, PowerPoint presentations and hand made books to assist in students presentations.

THEME UNIT

This term Stage One have been exploring and learning all about water in our "Waterworks" unit and also Wet and Dry Environments in library sessions. We have discovered there are many uses of water, explored water conservation and developed an understanding of the water cycle. This term's excursion to Mardi Dam will provide students with a hands on exploration of water usage in our local area.

YEAR TWO CARNIVALS

This term, Year Two students have been very busy participating in their very first Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals. We even had a number of students proceed to the Zone Cross Country! These carnivals have been a great way to mix with other students, represent our school house team and also learn something new.

SPORT

This term we are focusing on Athletics Skills and Modified Games. Students will move around rotational activities during Monday 2pm Sport to learn a variety of games and team building activities. A reminder to

all students to wear their sports shoes as we get very active during these lessons!

HEALTHY HAROLD IS COMING!

Netball Gala Day

Netball Gala Day

Last week a group of stage 3 boys and girls travelled to Baker Park in Wyong to compete in a netball gala day. We entered one all girls team and a mixed team. Lots of the students in both teams had never played netball before nor new any of the rules. We started the day with lots of football passes and interesting footwork from the boys but as the day went on they got the hang of it. Both teams had a win. Our girls defeated The Entrance and the mixed team defeated Blue Haven.

Everyone had lots of fun and tonnes of laughs. We ended up finishing the day with our two teams having a friendly match against each other. Killarney definitely won that game!

Thank you to all the Mums and Dads who were there to cheer the kids on. A special thank you to Ms Sandy for coaching and supporting our mixed team. Another big thankyou to Erin and Tiffany for umpiring all day.

Debate - Round 2

Premiers Debating Challenge

Last Friday our school debate team travelled to Narara Public school to compete in the second round of debating. Darby-Leigh, Inika, Danielle and Kilian looked very professional in their school blazers and represented our school with pride.

The topic of the debate was: All students, Year 5 and above should be allowed to use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. We were the negative team and had to disagree with the topic. The debate was very close with the adjudicator commenting on how well our team rebutted the others teams ideas. In the end Narara was awarded the win.

Our next debate is on Thursday 18th June (Week Nine) and will be held in our school hall. Feel free to come along and support our team as they take on Holgate.

Stage 2 - Term 2

ANZAC DAY

The 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing was commemorated in a whole school assembly here at Killarney Vale Primary School on Monday the 27th of April. Mr Charlton opened the service with the sounds of the bagpipe and was followed into the hall by Mr Moxon, our guest speakers from The Entrance RSL, Brisbane Water Legacy and P&C members. Kiara read our acknowledgement to country. Students sat and listened beautifully to words from solidiers past and present while remembering the sacrifices made by ANZAC men and women. Students from each class then respectfully laid wreaths while a burning candle flickered in front of a photo frame of a fallen soldier. In the lead up to ANZAC Day students had been learning about our ANZACS, war, peace and the history that forged our nation. Each stage completed an ANZAC activity for judging. Stage 1 completed colouring of a cross, Stage 2 designed their own peace poster and Stage 3 wrote a biography of a WW1 soldier. Mrs Maxwell and Mrs Lowe had the very difficult task of awarding a winner for each stage and their work. Congratulations to: Riley, Hannah, Rhianna and Daisy.

NAPLAN Years 3 and 5

Years 3 and 5 have just sat their 2015 NAPLAN exams. Year 3 prepared for this by completing previous NAPLAN tests. Students do this so that they are familiar with the format and layout of the exam as well as the types of questions posed in both literacy and numeracy. We are very proud of the way all students displayed their maturity and gave their very best efforts.

CAMP

Stage 2 is very excited to be heading to camp Toukley at the end of Term 3. Students will be leaving on Wednesday the 16th September and arrive back to school on Friday the 18th September.

Students will participate in a range of exciting and challenging activities such as quad bikes, the giant swing, archery, canoeing and BMX riding.

Stage 2 students who would like to attend camp have until Friday the 12th June to secure their deposit.

We are looking forward to a successful and enjoyable camp where wonderful memories are made.

SCIENCE

4P Seedlings

In Science 4P has been learning about Living Things with Plants as our focus. We have explored biological areas within our school grounds in search of living things. Once we found them we examined factors that affected them such as sunlight, soil, water and biodiversity. Students then germinted their own seeds in the classroom, making observations as their seed grew. This has been an exciting process for Year 4. Entering the classroom each day to find our seedling growing and changing has been a wonderful learning experience.

We have had a very busy start to Term 2!

Anzac Day Service

Our school leaders accompanied by some other KVPS students attended the Anzac Day March down at The Entrance. These students represented our school with pride and demonstrated enormous respect when marching. It was really nice to see a variety of K-6 students marching behind our school banner.

NAPLAN

As you would be well aware our Year 5 students have been sitting the NAPLAN tests this week. Our students are well prepared for the tests having completed practice tests and activities in the lead up to this week. These tests are simply a snapshot of the students and their achievement across literacy and numeracy.

Debating Team

Our debating team headed off on Monday to our first debate of the season. We came up against Kincumber and were given the topic ‘Homework should be banned'. Our team argued and rebutted extremely well and the adjudicator awarded KVPS the win. The team will be heading to Narara in week 6 to compete in round 2.

Sporting Teams

Lots of Stage 3 students have been training hard for upcoming PSSA matches. The football team are playing this Friday at a gala day, the netball gala day is next Wednesday and the soccer teams are waiting for their match to be confirmed. Training takes place in the students own time either at lunch or recess. Good luck to all of our teams!

Camp

We have had a very enthusiastic response to our Stage 3 camp with places filling within days of the note being handed out. We are off on Wednesday 21^st October and return on Friday 23^rd October. Our camp has been appropriately named ‘Gold Zoosnooz' as we will be panning for gold and sleeping at Dubbo Zoo. We are most certainly looking forward to camp!

Welcome back to Term 2!

I hope everyone had a relaxing Easter break and enjoyed the holidays.

Our Library Monitors have returned to their duties and it is fantastic to see them reading books and organising puppet shows for our K – 2 students in our lunchtime break. Our Library Monitors have a great sense of humor and you can often hear K – 2 laughing and enjoying the show! I'm so proud of all our KVPS Monitors, keep doing a brilliant job!

These past two weeks the library celebrated the ANZAC Centenary! To honour this occasion, the library was decorated with all things ANZAC. K-2 loved reading the text ‘My Grandad Marches On ANZAC Day' and we discussed the importance of this event. Primary students participated in an ANZAC Research Task that required them to use the Internet to research various questions on the topic. Primary has been practicing how to define what should be typed into the Google Search Bar. I was so impressed with our students overall appreciation, respectfulness, enthusiasm and interest that was demonstrated with the significance of the ANZAC Centenary. Well done KVPS, keep up the great work!

This term the library will be incorporating iPads into lessons, which will allow students to use them for research activities and also provide access to a wide range of Applications available to our school.

K – 2 students are borrowing again, so please remind your child to bring their library bag with them to their weekly library lesson and encourage them to borrow books on a regular basis.

I am so delighted to be the KVPS Librarian and I am so excited about the future of our school's library!

War Museum Visit

Last week 75 of our Stage 2 and 3 students were lucky enough to visit the RSL War Museum in The Entrance as part of the lead up to the centenary of World War I.

We were greeted by two very knowledgeable guides who provided our students with plenty of opportunities to explore the museum and were more than happy to answer lots of questions.

Some of the displays in the museum were of the uniforms that both men and women wore during various wars. There was a large collection of hats and a very impressive selection of guns hanging on the wall. The students were fascinated with the various medals and were very keen to investigate what the different colours on the medals represented.

All of the students who attended the excursion learnt something new and are taking a keen interest when learning about history in class. Many walked away feeling inspired and proud to be an Australian.

At the conclusion of our tour each student was presented with a medal to commemorate 100 years since Gallipoli. The medal features a picture of the famous Simpson and his Donkey.

An all you can eat lunch was kindly provided by the RSL club.

A big thankyou to the Long Jetty RSL Sub Branch for welcoming us into their museum. The students thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Zone Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday 3^rd March 31 students from our school travelled to Mingara Pool to compete in the Tuggerah Lakes Zone Swimming Carnival. We had a terrific day and achieved some outstanding results. Ryan Vesper, Rhys Lamond, James Lamond, Lillie Laidlaw, Danielle Vesper, Inika Booth, Kilian Carrel and Nolan Carrel will be representing our school at the Sydney North Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 17^th March.

Overall Killarney Vale Public School came 2^nd in the Zone with Terrigal coming in 1^st. Ryan Vesper was awarded Junior Boy Champion of the carnival and Danielle Vesper was runner up for the senior girl champion. Both Inika Booth and Kilian Carrel were the Senior Champions of the carnival.

What a fantastic achievement!

Congratulations to all of our students who represented our school with pride and demonstrated great sportsmanship.

This year Killarney Vale Public School has Mr Smith teaching computer lessons to all Stage 2 and Stage 3 classes in our fantastic Computer Lab! Mr Smith also gets to teach one Kindergarten class and one Year One class!

In the Computer Lab, Mr Smith teaches students how to log in and out of the computers and programs. He is also focusing on specific programs like Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint for more in depth lessons to provide students with the ability to create a way to display information. A variety of search engines are also being discussed in depth to provide students with effective strategies on obtaining information.

As Mr Smith loves his technology, he has been incorporating iPads into lessons which has allowed students to use a wide range of Applications that Killarney Vale Public School has to offer.

Mr Smith is now creating lessons where students will be using recording equipment and iMovies to present information that they have obtained on a variety of subjects. Some of the students work may appear on our school "App" or website so stay tuned!

KVPS Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all of our students for their efforts at the school swimming carnival which was held on Thursday 19^th February. It was fantastic to see a high level of participation and enthusiasm from all students.

Congratulations to Ryan Vesper and Kilian Carrel who both broke school records on the day.

We had a fantastic day with lots of cheering from the grandstand. Well done to our house captains for their efforts in leading their houses in their first major carnival for 2015.

A very special thank you to the team of 10 students from Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College – Berkeley Vale Campus who assisted and encouraged our students throughout the day. Your help was greatly appreciated.

TV Show - Move It

Move It

Last Thursday a group of 35 Stage 3 Students left school at 5:30am and headed to Fox Studios to film the ‘Move It' television show. We arrived at Fox Studios and began filming at 7:30am. Three episodes were filmed which starred twelve of our students. We had a great day and came home with lots of prizes for the contestants. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to see ‘behind the scenes' of a film studio and learn about the different jobs within the industry. The episodes we starred in will be on our screens later this year or early next year. The pictures below are proof that we really are Super Stars here at Killarney Vale!

It has been a wonderful start to 2015!

This year our library received a record number of students showing an interest and willingness to assist the librarian and their school. It is great to see enthusiastic students at KVPS. I thank our Library Monitors for their efforts in the library and look forward to their continuing assistance.

Kindergarten

It's been so lovely to meet our new Kindergarten students!

In the library Kindergarten have been learning all about the role of our library and it's such a delight to see Kindergarten students starting to visit the library at lunch times.

Stage 1

We have been discussing how picture books are placed on the shelf alphabetically and students have been thrilled to be given the opportunity to be a librarian and place the book on the appropriate shelf.

K-2 Note:

Students are beginning to borrow, so please remind your child to bring their library bag with them to their weekly library lesson and encourage them to borrow books on a regular basis.

Stage 2

Years 3 and 4 have been researching their favourite animals. Students are using the Internet to investigate their animal's characteristics, habitat and diet. It is interesting to see the wide variety of animals chosen, with students developing a love of using the Internet to research.

Stage 3

Years 5 and 6 are on a trip around the world! Students have selected a country of their own choice and are using the Internet to answer questions on a number of general topics such as location, flags, population, language, traditional foods and tourist landmarks.

What country do you think your child will explore on the Internet?

If you love the movie, read the book!

To encourage Stage 3 students to develop a love of reading, students have the opportunity to borrow a book on their favourite movie. Much interest has been shown in the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series and the Roald Dahl classics such as Matilda and The Witches. It has been fantastic to see an increase in Stage 3 borrowing!

The library is a wonderful place to be, so please encourage your child to visit me!

Welcome to Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have settled fabulously into school life. We have been learning our STAR rules, classroom routines, making new friends and learning lots of new and exciting things. This term we are beginning to learn how to read and write. We have made some amazing patterns, collected information to display, learnt about two dimensional shapes and counting, counting and more counting. We have started dancing in the hall and are learning all about safety at school, home and on the roads. What an amazing, busy four weeks we have had. The Kindergarten teachers are very proud how well they have adjusted and look forward to the rest of the year with these amazing 2015 Kindergarten students.

Settling Down To Work in Stage 2

Mrs Britten, Mrs Lowe, Mrs Baldwin, Mrs Maxwell and Mrs Page welcomes you to 2015 in Stage 2.

In Stage 2 we are busy settling into our class routines. Our reading and maths groups are now underway and students are immersing themselves in learning. Many students are forming new friendship groups and getting to know their peers better.

Maths Is Fascinating

Australian Curriculum maths looks at three main strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Students have been working with concrete materials such as folding geometric shapes, blocks, measurement devices, base ten blocks and scales. Maths groups are an ideal way to allow students these hands-on experiences. Maths games which involve turn taking and analytical thinking are another way we make maths fun. Sport

Every Thursday afternoon (weather permitting) Stage 2 and Stage 3 students venture out for sport. This term we are developing and improving the skills needed for our upcoming athletics carnival at the end of Term One. Mr Smith has developed a rotation roster for students to participate in: sprints, high jump, mini hurdles, shot putt, discus, relays and an obstacle course. Students enjoy encouraging each other and applying movement skills all while participating in exercise for health and fitness. We look forward to our athletics carnival knowing that we have had excellent preparation.

Dance

Stage 2 and 3 students involved in dance have been rehearsing every Thursday at lunchtime to polish up their dance act. They are working hard and are hoping to be selected for The Central Coast Dance Festival at Laycock Street Theatre in June. Miss Lizzie and Mrs Maxwell are an integral part of this. Stage 2 and 3 dancers would like to thank them for all their hard work so far.

We look forward to another wonderful year working with Killarney Vale students and their families.

Stage 1 have had a wonderful start to their year. We have been very busy organising our rooms and beginning some exciting work. This term our classroom theme unit is "Schoolyard Safari." We have been exploring Mini-Beast creatures around our school and have even had some come and visit!

Literacy and Mathematics groups are also under way as students participate in a variety of reading, writing and numeracy hands on learning experiences.

Sport will commence next Monday afternoon at 2pm. Students will be participating in Fundamental Movement Skills developing their hand eye co-ordination and team work skills.

SURF FUN DAY

Some Stage 2 and 3 students ventured to Toowoon Bay Beach for a Surf Fun Day. We participated in beach activities such as volleyball, surf rescue, board training and flag races. Our fun and knowledgable instructors taught us all about the ocean and safe beach practices. As well as learning all about our beaches we also had lots of laughs. It's easy to see why Toowoon Bay Beach has been voted one of the best beaches in Australia. It was an active and educational way to spend our day. Take a look at our gallery photos.

Concert Preparation

We have been very busy dancing, acting and singing in preparation for our school concert ‘Library Lockdown'. 5/6E have been re-creating Frankenstein, 5/6M have been practising their super hero skills and 5/6R have been dancing to the beat of the jungle drums with the famous George of the Jungle. Special mention to the Stage 3 students who are also assisting with backstage and introducing the fabulous acts.

Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Leadership Conference

20 Year 6 students were lucky to attend a leadership conference at Mingara. The day involved listening to key note speakers and breaking off into workshops. The focus of the day was on developing and extending the students leadership skills. The conference was a fabulous opportunity for our students to meet some new friends and catch up with old friends. A great day was had by all.

Special Guest – 5/6M

Commonwealth Games Athlete – Rae Anderson visited 5/6M to share her experiences and achievements in Glasgow. She competed in the T37 long jump event. Rae spoke about overcoming cerebral palsy to become a world champion athlete. The students were inspired to achieve their own personal bests.

Buddies

Each Friday Stage 3 visit their Kindergarten buddies. Buddies is a time where the children get to work together and build on our school spirit. This term we have read together, completed art activities, played games, made helicopters, shared our dioramas, sang songs, danced and create How to Train your Dragon masks. Buddies is our favourite time of the week!

Transition to High School

Several students have been attending GATS workshops on a Wednesday afternoon at both the local high schools. This is a time to experience high school life, make new friends and get to know the staff. Throughout the term there have been various opportunities for students to visit Berkeley Vale High. We have been involved in cupcake days, agriculture days, science days and maths in sport. We are all looking forward to attending the Koori Games day in week 9.

Next week is Bike Week. We are very excited to be able to bring our bikes to school.

Camp

Early on Monday 15^th September we are heading off to Canberra. We are in for a jam packed 3 days of non-stop fun and learning. Be prepared for very tired kids when we return!

Stage 2 Excursion to The Rocks, Sydney

Our excursion to The Rocks led us through one of the oldest areas of Sydney after British settlement. Students learnt about the original inhabitants of the area; the Cadigal people who lived on the land before settlers came. The history of the 11 ships which made up The First Fleet sailing into the harbour became part of our historic walk. We also had the opportunity to become one of the characters of the area from the 1700 and 1800's. Some became convicts and learnt about the crimes they committed, others became shop owners, soldiers and even Governor Phillip. Take a look at some of our gallery photos and follow the walk with us.

The Great Aussie Bush Camp

Stage 2 ventured out to Kincumber for a unique camping experience. We explored many outdoor activities such as The Tree Climb, Giant Swing, Pioneering, Bushcraft, Canoeing, Frisbee Golf, Archery and High Ropes. The importance of teamwork and co-operation were important elements in each activity. We built lifelong friendships and wonderful memories. We were sad to say goodbye to our Instructors who had guided and encouraged us through each and every activity but were excited to see our families to tell them all about our adventures.

Last Thursday (14.8.14) six students travelled to Brisbania Public School to represent our school in the Central Coast Public Speaking Competition. Each representative wrote their own speech on a topic of their choice.

Daisy – The pros and cons of being a little sister

These students worked very hard perfecting their speeches and represented our school with pride. The speakers spoke with confidence and entertained and informed their audience. High praise was received from the adjudicator, visiting teachers and parents.

Mixed Netball Gala Day

Earlier this term a group of Stage 3 boys and girls travelled to Adock Park in Gosford to play in a mixed netball gala day. We entered two mixed teams on the day. The experienced girls helped the boys to understand the game, it has so many rules! We started the day with lots of football passes and fancy footwork. By the end of the day the boys were experts and were shooting goals and catching intercepts with finesse.

As this was a NSW Netball Gala Day many schools had brought with them only their experienced players as players did not have to be mixed. Our school received many compliments on how fabulous it was to have a group of motivated and talented boys giving netall a go! All of the students enjoyed the day and both of our teams even got in a few wins........ and certainly lots of laughs!

Thank you to all the mums and dads who braved the cold to cheer our kids on all day. A special thank you to Erin McLean and Miss Sandy from Cubbyhouse who umpiring us all day. They did a wonderful job!

Education Week

We had a wonderful time moving around our stage, reading beautiful picture books and creating some detailed artworks last Friday at our Education Week Open Day. We were also entertained at the special assembly with our Stage 1 Dance Group, performing to "Like a drum." What stars they are!!!

Our COGS unit

This term, stage one students are learning about "the need for shelter." We are developing our understanding on who needs shelter and different kinds of shelter. At the end of the unit, students will be making their very own shelter. We are also busily preparing for our concert items, which is very exciting and fun! We cannot wait to show you all! If you are able to lend a hand in creating some of the costumes, please let your child's classroom teacher know as soon as possible.

Sport

This term, Stage 1 students are learning a range of individual and partner dances. We have already learnt the "Heel and Toe Polka" and the "Penguin Dance."

1/2K and 2BR Information Report Writing Unit

Mrs Keyes, Mrs Beemster and Mrs Raccani-Hewitt are very proud of the "Turtle Wall" students have created in the Art Room, as they have been learning about Sea Turtles and beginning to write their very own Information Report. We have created many "We wonder" questions like: "We wonder why turtles are endangered even though they lay up to 100 eggs at a time?" We hope we can "discover" some of these answers!!!!

Active After School

Active After School has begun for Term 3. Students in Year 2 have the opportunity to participate in this free program on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. This term students are learning skills in cricket and zumba.

Onsie and PJ Day

What a fun day Stage 1 had on Tuesday as they took part in a Student Parliament project "Onsie and PJ Day." We certainly enjoyed wearing some snuggly, warm clothing for a day!

Touch Footy Gala Day

KVPS Footy Team Make Us Proud ......

Congratulations to the elite sports boys and girls who participated in the Touch Footy Gala Day last week. In the first round both the boys and girls team played a fast paced game against Berkley Vale. Unfortunately they were both defeated but our school played with integrity, never gave up and played enthusiastically as a team. Our boys won their second game against Brooke Ave, improving their ball handling skills and they drove the ball forward with quick plays of the ball. The girls' team had a nail biting second half against Brooke Ave, loosing by only one try which was scored in the last few seconds of the game. All students should be proud of the sportsmanship they displayed and improved skills.

What a fantastic way to end Term 2 with a Talent Quest. Congratulations to all our performers who showcased their talents confidently and enthusiastically during the performance. We had dancers, singers, gymnasts, story tellers and didgeridoo players. Such a variety of talent at KVPS! A special thank you goes to Simone and Hollie who helped organise this event with Mrs Reid. Stage 3 - Forensic Science

FORENSIC SCIENTISTS IN TRAINING!

During Term 2 Stage 3 were lucky enough to have a police officer visit our school to talk to us about our COGS unit Way Out Communication/Forensic Science. We developed out interview techniques, gave detailed descriptions of possible suspects, discussed the collection of forensic evidence and role played the investigation of a crime committed in our school. We used the official police fingerprint equipment to analyse our fingerprints. What a great way to learn by inviting an expert in to teach how to investigate and solve crimes. These skills will come in handy in the next few weeks as we solve crimes that will be committed in our classrooms. Be warned ...... if you come to our Stage 3 classrooms you may become a suspect!! Congratulations to the students who participated in Super Star Day on Friday 20th June. We had Onesie vouchers, STAR Sports, movie in the hall, 30 minutes on the computer, no homework and classroom swap vouchers. What a great way to celebrate our positive behaviour in the classroom and playground. In just three weeks our student leaders sold over 150 vouchers. Congratulations STAR students!!

Debating - Round 2

On Tuesday (10.6.14) our school debate team travelled to Terrigal Public School to compete in Round Two of the Premiers Debating Challenge. Upon arrival at Terrigal Public School, the teams decided on the topic of the debate. Our team was given the task of arguing the affirmative side of the topic; "Should parents ban children from using social media sites." The teams were given just one hour to prepare their arguments, with only a dictionary, stopwatch and palm cards to help them. Simone, Evie, Chelsea and Ava did a fantastic job arguing our case and rebutted the other team's arguments well. The adjudicator for the debate was very impressed with both the affirmative and negative team arguments. The adjudicator awarded our team a win and provided us with some excellent feedback. Congratulations debate team on an excellent effort and our second win for the debate season. A very big thankyou to Mrs Vesper and Mrs Robertson who assisted with transporting our team. Our next debate is against Bateau Bay Public School in week 9 and will be our first ‘home' debate.

Last Monday (25.5.14) our school debate team travelled to Wamberal Public School to compete in Round One of the Premiers Debating Challenge. Upon arrival at Wamberal Public School, the teams decided on the topic of the debate. Our team was given the task of arguing the affirmative side of the topic; "There should be separate primary schools for smart kids." The teams were given just one hour to prepare their arguments, with only a dictionary, stopwatch and palm cards to help them. Simone, Evie, Chelsea and Danielle did a fantastic job arguing our case and rebutted the other team's arguments well. The adjudicator for the debate was very impressed with our teams' arguments and rebuttals and commented on how well our speakers were able to follow the structure of a debate. The adjudicator awarded our team a win and provided us with some excellent feedback. Congratulations debate team on an excellent effort and our first win for the debate season. A very big thankyou to Mrs Vesper and Mrs Robar who assisted with transporting our team. Our next debate is against Terrigal Public School in week 7.

Netball Gala Day 2014

Last Thursday (29.5.14) our school netball team travelled to Baker Park in Wyong to compete in the PSSA Netball Gala Day. We played our first match against Wyong Public School and we won 28 – 8. Our second match was against Tuggerah Public School and we also won 37 – 3. In our third match we came up against a very experienced Bateau Bay team who beat us 37 – 8.

Our girls represented our school with pride and displayed great sportsmanship. A very big thankyou to Ms Sandy from Cubbyhouse who gave up her own time to umpire all three of our matches. Also a very big thankyou to Danielle's Mum and Ava's parents for transporting our team to the courts.

Our girls will be joining forces with 9 boys to create two mixed teams which will compete in a gala day early next term.

64 of our finest athletes represented our school at the Zone Cross Country on Tuesday this week. Mrs Reid and Mrs Keyes were extremely proud of the behaviour and Killarney Vale spirit all students presented on the day. We were so lucky to have 4 students get into the top 6 and will be representing our Zone at the Regional Carnival. Congratulations to Evie, Inika, Danielle and Ryan!!!!

What a wonderful afternoon we had at our annual carnival; we were so fortunate that the rain held off!! I am so proud of each and every student who participated today to earn points for their houses. We are very proud of our Stage 3 Rugby League Team, who competed in the Gala Day at Morry Breen Oval on Friday 2nd May 2014. After a few intense training sessions with Mr Moxon, the boys put their skills to the test against Wamberal Public School. Congratulations to the boys who displayed bucket loads of enthusiasm, good sportsmanship, determination and tight teamwork. Our team had experienced players as well as some boys who were playing their very first game of rugby league. Unfortunately we were defeated but we are very proud of our boys who never gave up and represented our school proudly. Well done lads!!!

Congratulations to all the students who took part in our second Super STAR Day for 2014. We sold 287 vouchers in the last 5 weeks!! We really are Super STARS at K.V.P.S. Students loved the VIP Sports Hall and Making Music Vouchers this term. Some Stage 3 students saved their STAR Slips to buy several Cancel a Lesson Vouchers and were able to cancel a whole session of work. Mrs Reid enjoyed some of her Kinder students from last year visit her Primary classroom and many Year 6 students visited their Kinder buddies using a Classroom Swap Voucher. We have just updated our "Resources" tab, changing it to "Technology at KVPS." This tab contains links to websites and also has an array of iPad apps we use within the classroom on a daily basis. Feel free to click on them to get a better understanding of what they are. You also have the opportunity to purchase them through iTunes to use at home.

Clean Up KVPS

After our first Clean Up KVPS was rained out, Our second attempt last friday was very successful. Every class was responsible to clean up an area of our school. Stage 3 students enjoyed helping Kindergarten pull on some gloves and clean up their area. We are now litter free and looking good. Well done boys and girls!! Super Star Day

Congratulations to the 70 students who took part in our first PBL Super Star Day for 2014. This term we have sold many Classroom and Playground Swap Vouchers, Cancel A Lesson was very popular with Stage 3 students and Stage 1 students enjoyed a Dress Up Voucher. Mrs Reid spotted some Harry Potter characters in the playground and Ryan challenged Mrs Keyes to a game of table tennis using his VIP Sports Hall Voucher. Super Star Day

We had 154 vouchers sold for our last Super Star Day. Congratulations to all our students who earnt enough Star Slips to purchase a voucher. We had some students with crazy hair, visiting another classroom, swapping playgrounds or having freetime in their own classroom. Mrs McPherson, Mrs Smiley and Mrs Reid enjoyed a classy High Tea event with lots of "Thankyou darlings!"

K.V.P.S Television Stars

On the 27^th August we left school at 5:15am and headed to Fox Studio to film the ‘Move It' television episodes. The episodes we starred in will be on our screens later this year or early next year.

A big thankyou to the parents who joined us on our big adventure. It was great to see your support for the children.

Talent Quest 2013

Congratulations to all our students who participated in KVPS 2013 Talent Quest. We had talented musicians, comedians, dancers and actors performing to a very high standard. Congratulations to Jonah Diaz who won first prize with his amazing dance moves. Jake Whitford danced his way into second place and the very well rehearsed One Direction Crew, Amalia, Judah, Della, Kiara and Zali, took out third place. I'm sure we'll see these super stars performing on Australia's Got Talent very soon.

Student Leadership Conference

On 20th August, a group of 20 Year 6 students represented our school at the annual Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Student Leadership Conference held at Magenta Shores Resort. The morning began with musical performances from local high school student leaders, followed by a motivational speech from Jo Townsend, producer for 60 Minutes on Channel 9. After morning tea, all 180 students in attendance split up into small groups and participated in a variety of interactive workshops to develop their confidence and leadership skills. We look forward to seeing how these responsible student leaders are able to apply what they learned at the conference to upcoming projects within our school community

Healthy Harold Visits KVPS

Everyone enjoyed The Life Education Van visiting our school, especially Kindergarten.
Students learnt about food, exercise and medicine, enabling them to make healthy lifestyle choices. Kindergarten especially enjoyed meeting Healthy Harold and feeding him his most favourite food, carrots!

Mixed Netball Gala Day 2013

On Wednesday 25th July a group of 22 stage 3 boys and girls travelled to Adcock park at Gosford to play a Gala Day. We entered two mixed teams on the day. The amazing experienced girls helped the boys understand the game, as it has so many rules! By the end of the day the boys were experts and were shooting goals and catching intercepts with finesse! Our players of the day went to Bowan Slee and Logan Sipple for their outstanding effors and achievements on the day. Congratulations!

As this was the inaugural Netball NSW Gala Day, many of the schools had only brought with them their experienced netball girls. However, everey school commented on how fabulous it was to have such a motivatede and talented boys giving netball a go. They all said they would bring their boys next year. We are certainlt trend setters at Killarney Vale!

Thank you to all the mums and dads, nans and uncles who braved the cold to cheer our kids on all day. A special thank you to Tahlia Partland and Miss Sandy from Cubbyhouse for umpiring for us all day. They did an amazing job. Thank you to Mrs Easson who has been working with Mrs Keyes, for coming and looking after one of our teams all day.

I have never been more proud to be apart of KVPS and can't wait to do it all again next year.

Rugby League Knockout 2013

Our Rubgy League team once again competed in the Central Coast All School Rugby League Carnival this year on Thurday 20th June at Budgewoi Oval, in the smaller schools division.

We were pooled to compete against Chittaway Bay, Erina Heights, Mannering Park and Woongarah. Although we had mixed fortunes of winning against Wonngarah and Chittaway Bay. (The local derby in the Francis household!) We were defeated by Erina Heights and Mannering Park, the eventful winners of our division.
It needs to be said that the group of boys wi accompanied on this day were exceptional in both their behaviour and their sportsmanship and are a credit to their school, their parents and themselves.

A HIGE THANK YOU goes to both Anthony Cotterill and Shane Moore who devoted personal time to train after school hours and coach out tram on the day this year. A HUGE THANK YOU also gos to the many parents who are always there to help transport and support out children in competition

Debating News!

On Thursday 18^th July the Killarney Vale Public School debating team participated in a debate against Bateau Bay Public School. Upon arrival at Bateau Bay School, the teams decided on the topic of the debate. Our team was given the task of arguing the negative side of the topic; "Junk food should be banned for people under the age of eighteen." The teams were given just one hour to prepare their arguments, with only a dictionary, stopwatch and palm cards to help them. Ava, Tara, Jacqui and Chelsea did a fantastic job arguing our case and rebutted the other team's arguments well. The adjudicator for the debate was very impressed with the both teams' arguments and rebuttals and commented on just how difficult it was to choose a winner. She awarded the Bateau Bay team the win on the day, stating again how just close it was and providing some great feedback, which we will use to our advantage against the other Bateau Bay team this Thursday. Congratulations debate team on an excellent effort!

Basketball News!

On Thursday 18^thJuly our boys and girls basketball teams played in a gala day at Scholastic Stadium, Terrigal. The boys lost their first game to Terrigal and lost to The Entrance 15-14 in a tough, close contest. We lost our last game to a second Terrigal side. Although our boys were beaten each game, they did not give up or become discouraged. They continued encouraging each other and playing fairly. Our girls' team lost their first and second games to Terrigal and The Entrance and came away with a win in the final game against Gosford. The girls became more confident and improved as the day went on and they did their best until the very end. Unfortunately both teams were eliminated from the basketball knockout but we had plenty of fun and learnt something new about basketball. The boys and girls of Killarney Vale did themselves proud as school representatives- Well done once again!

Dance Festival

In week 8 & 9 of Term 2, the Stage 1 and Stage 3 dance group performed at the Central Coast Dance Festival to a sold out audience. Stage 1 danced to "Feel the Love" and Stage 3 performed to "Freeze Frame." All students performed spectaularly, they were truly "shining stars!"

There will be an opportunity this term to see these great dancers perform again. Notification will be posted in the newsletter.

Both Mrs Francis and Mrs Keyes are very proud of the dedication and focus these girls and boys put into making their dance special.

BREAKING NEWS "Move it" TV Auditions

Last Friday 19^th July, 34 Year Six students auditioned to be part of a brand new television show. The show is titled ‘Move It' and tests the students' general knowledge and teamwork skills. ‘Move It' is produced by Ambience Entertainment who have also produced Kitchen Whiz, Pyramid, Magical Tales and Go Go Stop. Within the next couple of weeks we will find out who has made it through to compete on the show. The show will be filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney later in the year. Make sure you keep checking our website to see who our future TV stars will be!

Zone Cross Country

On Tuesday 28th May, Mrs Keyes and Mr Bof took 65 talented athletes to the Zone Cross Country Carnival. All students represented KVPS with true sportsmanship and great participation. Outstandingly, we were luck to have four students; Ryan Vesper, Danielle Vesper, Inika Booth and Jacqui Vesper who came in the top 6, rewarding them with a place at Sydney North. KVPS are so proud of all the athletes who took part. Congratulations.

Stage 3 - A Journey to Antarctica

On Wednesday 10^th April Stage 3 had the opportunity to meet professional adventurer Chris Olsen. Chris has been on 3 expeditions to Antarctica and was able to share his experiences with us. Chris brought along various props and the Stage 3 students were able to touch different equipment as well as view real DVD footage of Antarctica. All students who attended the presentation were able to touch real glacier ice that Chris had brought back from his last expedition. The presentation ended with an ice axe demonstration which all of the students thoroughly enjoyed. Be sure to check out some of the photos!

Young Leaders Day!

Young Leaders Day

On Monday 25^th March our school leaders attended National Young Leaders Day at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

The objectives of this day were to:-

Inspire students to make a positive contribution to their school.
Motivate students to be great leaders in their area of influence.
Empower students with practical skills of balancing study, school commitments and social life as well as managing the stress in these areas.
Promote the value of inspirational and positive role models as examples to others, by exposing students to a diverse range of leaders and their views on leadership.
Educate students about the need to grow in knowledge and practical skills in the areas of excellence and leadership.
Connect students with other students from other schools and develop long term support networks.

Better Buddies!

Our Better Buddies Program is proving popular with both Kindergarten and their Year 6 Buddies. Each weesk students look forward to seeing their buddies on Friday. Activities enjoyed during Term 1 include dancing, singing, games, craft and completing a colouring competition for Boardies Day. Year 6 even helped us complete some activities in our homework books.

We have welcomed our new Kindergarten students for 2013 through a successful 5 week Kinder Orientation program. Many smiling faces participated enthusiastically during group activities, storytime, music sessions and craft activities.

Some super smarties already know how to write their name.

Thankyou to our Year 5 buddies who helped to keep smiles on everyones faces, including the teachers as they were wonderful helpers.

The kindergarten teachers can't wait to see our new Kindergarten students in their school uniforms next year, ready to begin "Big School".

Welcome to the Killarney Vale Website. We are very proud of our school and hope you enjoy finding out about our lovely spot on this website. We believe we have enthusiastic, friendly students, dedicated staff who work as a great team and wonderful parents who all contribute to make our school special.

At Killarney Vale we strive to meet the challenge of preparing our students for a successful future. Our educational programs assist children with learning difficulties, address the needs of talented students and challenge all students to do a "personal best" in everything.

We offer a great variety of extra curricula activities to provide opportunities for students to develop a wide range of interests and skills as I'm sure the pictures on this website will show. Our students excel in the areas of sport, drama, music, dance and public speaking.

Many of our programs are only possible thanks to the dedication of our highly skilled and professional staff. Their expertise and generous contributions make our many achievements possible.

Our parent community actively support our school both financially and in terms of classroom assistance and working bees. Some of their recent projects include our computer lab, interactive whiteboards in every room and a state of the art sound system in the hall.

A star in the making...

Our super star sportsman represented K.V.P.S at the Sydney North Athletics Carnival in Term 3 for Shot Put. He threw a massive throw of 9.44m, which gave him the title of 1st place! On the 19th October Bowen represented our school at the State Athletics Carnival. He showed true sportsmanship and K.V.P.S spirit. We are so proud of his achievements. Well done Bowen!
